August Viewpoint
Get ready for our August picnic to be held on our regular meeting night at 6:30 PM (or whenever you and Kathy can get there, Tom) on Wednesday, August 17th. There will not be a meeting at Evergreen Lanes. Many thanks go to Dixon and Nita Marshall who has offered their home for the event. They are located in the Silver Lake area at 11111 24th Dr. SE, Everett. Driving on the Bothell-Everett Hwy., go east on 110th, passing Key Bank and Silver Lake Safeway. Go right on 24th Dr. (first right street). Their house is on the left side of street. It’s potluck, so bring a salad, a hot dish, or a dessert. You will receive a reminder call as we get near the date and any updated info needs to be shared. Our picnics have been fun, so bring your spouse and/or significant other, kids, (no dogs) and we’ll have another good time!
Yours in Lionism, Carol

Thank You Committee Chair People!
A special thank you goes to Lion Wilma Tilly for volunteering for the eye care committee chair before the July meeting. Also to Lions Tom Knowlton and Dixon Marshall for not complaining upon being assigned to chair the fundraising and service projects committees, respectively, because they are the club vice presidents. Of course, several members volunteered to chair committees during our planning session at the July meeting, some taking more than one. Thank you to everyone who volunteered. It is up to us to support our chair people when they seek help. I know you will all say yes to their requests. There are still some committee chair person opportunities available for those who missed the July meeting!
Hearing Care Status
Much discussion during our July meeting centered on the need for a chair for this committee and a process for helping hearing care applicants. We are in the process of establishing the process our club will follow. With the help of Lion Solly Rubin of Everett Central and our own Lion Bob Well, we are on the way to establishing that necessary process. Since the meeting, Lion Bob has contacted Lisa McKay at Sonus Hearing, 3224 Colby, Everett. She has agreed to do the appropriate tests free, and will send the results to Bob who will determine the applicant’s need. If there is a hearing need, Bob will notify the chair person who will present it to the board for approval.
The chair person will have previously sent out a club form seeking name, address and income status. If that form is not received, or the chair does not approve the economic need, it will not get to the hearing test stage. All of this begins with a call, usually to one of the officers. We refer the person to the chair who will call him/her for info to send the club form. So, now that a process has been established, it should be easier for someone to volunteer for this committee chair. If not, I have people in mind that I will call.
Dues Increase
Another great chunk of July meeting time was devoted to the need for a dues increase. Our annual dues have been $50.00 for many years. I became a member in the fall of ’98 and it has always been that amount. I’m not certain how many years before that it was the same amount. Our problem is a result of not raising the dues as International and MD 19 raised their portions. Thus, of that $50.00 amount International gets $39.00 per year. MD 19 gets $15.00. You do the math…it adds up to $54.00. Our dues fee does not cover those expenses. With nothing in our club budget from our dues charge, we have been scrambling to pay the $30.00 monthly storage fee, our annual post office box fee, guest dinners, postage, to mention just a few expenditures. The thought of raising dues and possibly losing members is not good, but the resulting discussion decided there was no choice but to do so. Amounts of $60.00, $65.00, $70.00, and $75.00 were suggested. A quick accounting revealed that the $60.00 amount wouldn’t cover the expenses.
So treasurer, Harold Suchan appointed Elta Morgan chair and Tom Knowlton member of the budget committee. They will meet before the August picnic to do the budget, analyze our administrative expenses and determine an appropriate dues charge. Come to the picnic with your questions and ideas.
